B.C.’s Electric Outdoor Power Equipment Recycling Program Exceeds Collection Site Target by 20 Per Cent for Year One
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA–(Marketwired – Aug. 26, 2013) – The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute of Canada’s (OPEIC) new recycling program for old or broken electrical outdoor power equipment has exceeded its collection site target by more than 20 per cent for year one.
The program – the first and only government-approved outdoor power equipment recycling program in B.C. – launched in July 2012 with a program target of 80 collection sites across the province. As of August 2013, the Institute has surpassed that figure, establishing contracts with 102 collection sites.
Unlike traditional stewardship programs where a separate collection system has been developed to collect, transport and recycle end-of-life products, OPEIC has taken an environmentally-conscious non-conventional approach and utilized the existing collection and transportation network operated by the steel recycling business.
In partnership with the Canadian Association of Recycling Industries (CARI), OPEIC has developed a permanent recycling network that provides year-round recycling options for consumers wishing to return their broken or unwanted electric outdoor power equipment. The CARI metal recyclers in B.C. are ideal return collection facilities for electric outdoor power equipment because they are regulated by the Ministry of Environment and have established Environmental Management Programs to ensure proper handling of hazardous wastes.
Further ensuring British Columbians can drop off their unwanted electric outdoor power equipment with ease – and at no charge – OPEIC has included retailers and local municipalities as part of its elaborate collection site network.
